Happy New Year to everyone! With the start of the new year, it is time to resume Friday flowers. I must say, with all the record setting cold weather, it is becoming more difficult to find flowers. Plants that would normally bloom during this time are apparently hunkering down just like I have been doing for the last few weeks. Still, some brave souls bloom in spite of difficult conditions.
This week’s flower is a Christmas Cactus. Some folks spend extra effort to make sure that the plant is actually in bloom when its name says it should be. I, of course, pay no attention to any of that and just welcome the blooms when they feel like presenting themselves. I have four of these plants and this is a small one. Although they are called cactus, they are really tropical epiphytes and prefer an environment more like a tropical orchid or bromeliad. In other words, they would be happy living in the dead leaf filled arms of a tree (me too).
If I remember to do so, I will plant one of these in my ficus tree in the spring and see what happens next year. That is my intention. Now let’s hope my memory cooperates. I wish the same for you; that you remember to do what you intend.
