This is a spectacular orchid blossom. What you can't see is it is entirely supported by a root system that lives in a plastic basket no bigger than a small hand. The basket has just a few pieces of tree bark.
I have always been amazed at how many orchids require very little to produce such beauty. This particular orchid has no soil, thin long roots that sway in the wind, and receives no food from me. How does it produce such beauty in such impoverished circumstances?
Well, first it has to be in the nature of the plant to showcase itself. This flower is simply what this orchid does. My second thought is a little more understandable to us as humans. You can’t tell from this photograph but this orchid is hanging from a nail on a coconut palm. Some of its roots are embedded in the palm. Perhaps it is also the relationship between the palm and the orchid that leads to such beauty.
On this long weekend of Thanksgiving, I give thanks to all of you whose relationship with me has allowed me to bloom and share what is beautiful in me.
