Don’t let the large leaf in the front of this picture fool you. It has nothing to do with today’s flower. Well, not entirely nothing. It’s the leaf of a ground orchid and it shares a pot with the bromeliad that is producing today’s flower. Why do I have orchids and bromeliads sharing a pot together? Because, when I planted the ground orchid it looked lonely and pitiful in the pot by itself. Besides, I had never been successful growing ground orchids, so I put the bromeliads in there to fill the pot up and to ensure that something was still alive should the ground orchid die.

As it turned out, the orchid overgrew the pot and produced spectacular flowers. The orchid became entirely entwined with the bromeliads, so much so that you can barely tell them apart nor tear them apart. They remind me of some old couples and friends of mine. We may have been put together for the wrong reasons and maybe other people doubted the relationships could last, but after years of sharing the same space, after years of becoming so entwined it’s difficult to tell or tear us apart, it is clear the pairings were good for all of us. And even though it is difficult to tell us apart, when we bloom, it is quite apparent we are as different as an orchid and a bromeliad.

This weekend thank an old friend you have become entwined with or thank an old couple who have been an inspiration to you. It is quite a feat to get so close and still be able to bloom your own flower.
