Bird

You’ve heard the saying that all things come to those who wait. Well, this was one really long wait! Years ago I was helping a friend clean up her back yard. She had this really massive Bird of Paradise that had stopped blooming. We dug it up and split it into 5 or 6 still really large plants. We replanted most of them in her yard, but I took two smaller plants home with me. I put one in a pot and another in the ground on the other side of my house. I’m never sure where a plant is going to do its best, so I usually give them several residential options.

Five, six, seven years go by and neither of my “birds” does any blooming. I had given up and decided maybe there is a kind of plant senility and they just don’t bloom anymore. Then, last Sunday as I was tearing around the corner of my house in an attempt to get everything ready to power wash the stairs, I ran smack dab (literally) into this bloom. Its only one bloom and it is from the Bird of Paradise that is in the pot. I would never have guessed the pot plant would bloom before the ground plant, but then I obviously was wrong about giving up and thinking they would never bloom. So what do I know!

I did go ahead with the power wash and this “bird” was under the rain of stair dirt, mildew, and bleach. It didn’t seem to mind one bit.

Have a great weekend and I hope you too run smack dab into something that surprises you.
